A brighter smile, faster than you'd expect.
If your only experience of whitening is a heat lamp, a mouthful of gel, and counting down the minutes until the zinging stops, there's a newer way. Fotona TouchWhite™ uses a precise laser wavelength to activate the whitening gel directly — which generally means a shorter appointment and a noticeably calmer visit than traditional light-activated systems like Zoom.
The gap between wanting a brighter smile and actually booking it.
For a lot of people, it's not that whitening feels complicated — it's that the last time they tried it wasn't especially comfortable, or it took longer than expected on a lunch break. So the appointment keeps getting pushed to "next month". If a few of these sound familiar, this page is worth a read.
- Smiling with your mouth closed in photos, out of habit rather than choice.
- Remembering a past in-chair whitening session mainly for the sensitivity, not the result.
- Wanting a brighter smile without wanting to give up a whole afternoon for it.
- Wondering if there's a gentler option than the heat-lamp systems you've heard about.
- Not being sure how to keep a bright smile, rather than watching it fade in a few months.
How a beam of light does the work, not a heat lamp.
Fotona TouchWhite™ uses a specific laser wavelength — tuned to interact almost exclusively with water. Whitening gel is largely water-based, so when the laser is directed at the gel sitting on your teeth, the gel absorbs that energy almost completely and switches on far faster than it would under a standard light or heat lamp.
Because the laser energy is absorbed by the gel itself rather than travelling further into the tooth, very little of that energy reaches the enamel, the dentine, or the nerve underneath. The gel does the whitening work; the laser simply activates it, precisely and briefly. That's the core idea behind TouchWhite: switch the gel on efficiently, without relying on prolonged heat sitting on the tooth.
- The same laser platform used for several of our other laser dentistry treatments — tuned to a wavelength that whitening gel absorbs very efficiently.
- Designed so the energy is taken up by the gel first, rather than passing straight through to the tooth structure.
- Built to activate the gel in short, precise bursts rather than one long, continuous heat cycle.
General information only. How your teeth respond to any whitening treatment depends on the individual — we'll assess your teeth and gums before recommending TouchWhite, Zoom, or another option, and explain what's realistic for you.
How TouchWhite compares to traditional heat-lamp whitening.
You don't need the science to notice the difference in the chair. Here's how the two approaches compare on the things patients actually ask about.
| Fotona TouchWhite™ | Traditional Zoom whitening | |
|---|---|---|
| Comfort | Designed to feel calm and comfortable. Because the laser engages the gel in short, precise bursts, patients commonly avoid the sharp zinging sensation associated with prolonged heat-lamp exposure. | Uses a heat lamp held over the gel across several longer cycles — this extended heat exposure is when many patients experience the well-known "zingers", brief sharp twinges of sensitivity. |
| Speed | The laser activates the gel almost immediately on contact, so a full appointment is typically shorter than a traditional lamp-based session. | Requires multiple longer lamp cycles to activate the gel fully, which extends total chair time. |
| Safety | Laser energy is absorbed by the gel itself, limiting how much heat reaches the tooth's enamel, dentine and nerve. | Relies on sustained external heat directed at the tooth surface over a longer period to activate the gel. |
Comfort, timing and sensitivity vary between individuals — some people are naturally more sensitive than others, regardless of the whitening method used. We'll examine your teeth and gums first and explain what's realistic for you before any treatment begins.
One in-chair visit. A bright smile you keep topping up.
A single Fotona TouchWhite session is a strong starting point, but any whitening — laser or lamp — fades gradually over time as everyday coffee, tea, red wine and simply having enamel do its job take their toll. That's the exact problem our Frequent Smiles programme was designed to solve.
Frequent Smiles is our ongoing patient programme: as long as you keep up your regular 6-monthly hygiene visits, you stay eligible for complimentary take-home whitening top-up gel at each qualifying visit, using trays fitted specifically for you. It turns a single whitening appointment into an ongoing habit, rather than a one-off event you have to remember to repeat.

Patients having an in-chair or laser whitening treatment — like Fotona TouchWhite — may currently join Frequent Smiles at no extra cost, with full access to the programme's ongoing top-up benefit. It's our way of making sure your first whitening visit isn't the end of the plan; it's the start of one.
Frequent Smiles membership depends on attending qualifying 6-monthly hygiene visits and staying within the programme's active window; top-up gel is provided only where clinically appropriate on the day, and results vary between individuals. Full terms are available in-clinic — ask our team, or we'll talk you through them at your consultation.
Whitening, explained before it's started.
An assessment first
We check your teeth and gums before any whitening begins, and talk you through what's realistic for your smile — no assumptions, no surprises.
A shorter chair-side visit
Because the laser activates the gel quickly, a TouchWhite appointment is generally more efficient to fit around your day than a multi-cycle lamp session.
A plan for staying bright
Frequent Smiles means your first whitening visit isn't the end of the plan — it's the start of an ongoing one, built around your regular check-ups.
