What is Sedation Dentistry?

Dental anxiety is a real problem, and it can prevent people from getting the dental health care they need.

When you have dental anxiety issues, visiting the dentist can be scary or uncomfortable. You may feel nervous about what to expect or how pain will be managed during your appointment. That’s why sedation dentistry is so important for patients with severe fear of dentists. Sedation dentistry involves administering medications to help anxious patients relax while they undergo dental treatment. The goal is to control stress and pain during dental treatment through sedation.

To help our patients feel comfortable at Magical Smiles, we offer a variety of in-house sedation dentistry methods. Each method offers benefits like improved relaxation and decreased sensitivity. When you feel at ease, we’re able to work more efficiently and complete your care in fewer appointments.

How Sedation Can Help with Dental Anxiety

Dental anxiety and phobia can adversely impact a person’s quality of life, but there are ways to alleviate these significant obstacles. Those who fear the dentist may find some relief by using sedation dentistry. Your dentist can provide sedation before or during dental care, allowing you to relax while receiving care.

Sedation can be applied to procedures ranging from invasive procedures to simple dental cleaning. Patients benefit from sedation dentistry by experiencing dental procedures in a relaxed manner. In most cases, patients have no recollection of the procedures they undergo and feel no dental fear or anxiety.

With sedation dentistry, even the most challenging dental phobia situations can be handled gently.

Why Choose Magical Smiles As Your Caroline Springs Dentist

Getting anaesthesia always involves some risk. However, a qualified health practitioner can safely administer it. Magical Smiles is here to change the way you feel about going to the dentist. During your exam and consultation, we’ll walk you through the advantages of each sedation option to find the one best for your situation. It may be that you would do better with a lighter sedative than someone else or have medical concerns that prevent choosing a deeper medication.

Be sure to bring a copy of your current medications, as well as a list of recent surgeries or hospitalisations you’ve had. If necessary, we can talk with your primary care physician to discuss the type of sedative best for your situation.

FAQs About Sedation Dentistry.

We’ll discuss the type of sedation procedure that’s best for your given situation during your exam. Depending on your age, health background, comfort level, and needed procedure, you can consider options for sedation like:

  • Nitrous Oxide:
Happy gas is mild and effective, yet quickly reversible. It can be added to practically any procedure. Since the results wear off in a matter of minutes, it’s safe to drive yourself to and from your appointment.
  • Oral Sedation:
For a deeper and more relaxed state, oral conscious sedation is the next step. You’ll take a prescription medication an hour before your planned treatment, causing you to feel sleepy and possibly nod off. The amnesic effects of conscious sedation prevent some people from remembering their appointment altogether.
  • General and IV Sedation:
A licensed anaesthetist will administer a deeper sedative medication via an IV line. Intravenous sedation maintains semi-consciousness, while general anaesthesia makes it feel like you’re sleeping. Both are fast-acting.

Aside from happy gas, other types of dental sedation will cause lingering drowsiness that takes a few hours to wear off. You’ll need to plan on a friend or family member to provide transportation to and from our practice.

The use of conscious sedation, deep sleep sedation, and general anesthesia is only legal in Australia for dentists who have obtained the appropriate accreditation from the Dental Board of Australia. The Australian Dental Association regulates who can perform sedation dentistry due to the risks involved. The administration of sedation must be performed by a dentist or medical professional who is appropriately trained.
Sedation can be used in all dental procedures, ranging from an invasive procedure to simple dental cleaning. Its use depends on how severe the dental patient’s fear is.

If you receive conscious sedation (nitrous oxide gas, oral sedation, and IV sedation), you will be awake for most of the procedure and may remember some of it afterwards. Except for nitrous oxide sedation, these sedation dentistry methods will cause lingering drowsiness that may take a few hours to wear off. You’ll need to plan on a friend or family member to provide transportation to and from our practice.

With general anaesthesia, however, you would be mostly unconscious and have no memory of the procedure. It may take hours for it to wear off, so you’ll need someone to drive you home.
